Cell description

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the inverted pendulum system and its equations of motion and representation in MATLAB.
  • Illustrate how feedback can be used to create oscillations and control in a biological system.
  • Apply MATLAB for loops and create a stacked plot.
  • Describe how images and movies are also signals that can be analyzed.
  • Illustrate the connections between control, systems, and sets of equations.

How to Complete This Module:

  1. View Lectures 2A-2F and Examples 1-5.
  2. Complete the assigned reading to supplement the material presented in the lectures.
  3. Participate in the module discussion.
  4. Complete and submit the module assignment.

Module 2 Discussion Participation GuidelinesQuestion:

Cell description

Discussion forum rubric:  625.260 Discusssion Rubric

Participation Guidelines

Participation in class discussions are important in this course and to your final grade. Be energetic in your participation, posting discussion responses assigned in each module, interacting with other students and your instructor, in your responses and postings.

Check the rubric above to ensure you understand the expectations and how you will be assessed on these important assignments.

There is one discussion thread in this module. Submit your posts by clicking on the "Module 2 Discussion" link above and creating a new thread. Please contribute to the class discussion with your disscussion about:

Question:

Thread 2.1

  • What values you found worked and what didn’t for your MATLAB oscillation code?
  • How much experience have you had with simulations of oscillation and/or control?

For responses to classmates' posts, please realize that just posting ‘I agree’ or ‘I disagree’ is not sufficient.

Don’t be afraid to share your insights and discoveries. This is how we will build a community around the course.
You are asked not only to create an original post, but also to thoughtfully respond to at least two of your peers for full credit. Your initial posts are due by midnight on Day 4 of this module. Responses to your peers are due by midnight on Day 7 of this module.

Required Activity: 1 Original Post / 2 Responses Due by: Original Post 11:59PM Day 4, Responses 11:59PM Day 7

Module 2 Personal Learning Journal

Cell description

Journal Rubric:   Journal Rubric

Participation Guidelines

Each of you will keep a reflective journal that documents your progress through the course.

The entries in this journal are partly based on solving problems and partly based on discovering connections between the material and your own job or career goals.

Initially all of the journal entries will be observed and commented on only by the instructor and not shared with other students. As we evaluate the progress of the course and your journal entries, we may mutually decide that some journal entries should be shared. We’ll do that only by mutual consent and we’ll use the discussion forums for that type of sharing.

Keeping a journal is a bit like keeping a lab book or a collection of research notes. It can be a lifelong resource if handled in the right way.

The goal of this part of the course is to help you to get further engaged with the material and to prevent it from being simply an academic exercise. Please do take advantage of this opportunity to really become knowledgeable in how the course can connect back to your original goals in taking the class.

Instructions

Your initial entry in your journal should comment on the prompts below:

  • How a model for feedback control of oscillation is helpful/insightful for something that you are interested in understanding and/or are already working on.
  • Some ideas for future projects that you might want to undertake that involve models of oscillation and/or control.

Click on the “Module 2 Personal Learning Journal” above to access your journal and create your entry.

Required Activity: Create a reflective personal journal entry post in response to the prompts given. Due by: 11:59 PM Day 7
