Overview

In this module we will continue examining combinations of gate logic components to provide the foundation for digital circuits capable of performing binary arithmetic operations.  Half and Full Adder circuits will be presented with their performance represented in both truth table and bit stream form.  These circuits will then be combined to illustrate their use in multi-digit addition and subtraction circuits.  Flip-flop circuits whose output depends on both input values as well as internal state conditions are illustrated.  Finally, the principles of digital circuits are employed to illustrate and understand counter/divider circuits as well as pseudo-random sequence generator shift register circuits.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Construct basic half and full adder circuits and represent their performance in both truth table and fit stream forms.
  • Construct a four bit adder/subtractor circuit and describe its performance including the use of 2’s complement in the subtraction process.
  • Construct various types of flip-flop circuits with their associated performance.
  • Use a flip-flop circuit to construct counter, divider, and shift-register circuits.
  • Construct a pseudo-random sequence generator.
