Overview

In this module, we will examine digital waveforms and observe the basic difference between digital and analog circuits.  We will see that digital circuits are naturally suited for two state operations and effectively communicate and process binary information characterized by sequences of ones and zeros.  Consequently, this module will review binary numbers and examine them as alternative numbers.  Arithmetic and logic operations are described in terms of basic Boolean operations.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize a digital signal and describe its fundamental difference from an analog signal.
  • Determine the base 10 value of various numbers systems represented using other bases. 
  • Represent a negative binary number in a one’s complement and a two’s complement system.
  • Perform arithmetic operations in various number systems.
  • Construct basic Boolean logic operations using standard logic gates.
