Cell description

This module starts by giving some historical context of electromagnetics up until the time of Michael Faraday.  Next we will look at the experiment(s) that led Faraday to generate his law of induction.  In the next part of the module we will examine the integral and point form of the law and consider applications of the law.

Summary

We examine Faraday’s law of electric induction in both the integral and differential or point form.  We will see how this law allows electric generation and well as electric motors.  We will look at Michael Faraday’s concept of generating an electric field or electric current in a circuit by cutting the “lines of force” that represent the magnetic field.  This is an alternate and useful way to describe a time changing magnetic field.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Given a time changing magnetic field, calculate the induced current and electric motive force.
  • Calculate line integrals.
  • Explain how electric field circulation, emf and the energy used moving a charge through a circuit are related.
  • Calculate the circulation or curl of the electric field induced at a point by a time changing magnetic field at that point..
  • Explain how Faraday’s discovery followed from developments in electrolysis, audio waves and electromagnetics that preceded.
