Overview SummaryObjectives

Cell description

Summary

Nonlinear elements including diodes and transistors are important in the design of circuits including amplifiers and other active circuits. In this module, we will discuss bipolar devices including p-n junction diodes and npn transistors. The discussion will include both DC (large signal or nonlinear circuits) and AC (small signal) equivalent circuits.

This module is divided into three parts.  The first part introduces diodes models and load lines.  The second introduces bipolar transistors and biasing.  The last part analyzes small signal transistor amplifiers.

Objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Calculate the currents and voltage drops across diodes in circuits using equivalent circuit models.
  • Design the DC bias circuit for an npn transistor amplifier.
  • Calculate the gain of a transistor stage.

Module 5 Discussion

Cell description

Click the Module 5 Discussion link above to access and participate in the discussion forum.

Please choose and discuss at least two questions from the options below.

Question 1

In Lecture 5A an equivalent circuit for a diode is discussed and includes an ideal diode with a threshold voltage of 0.7 volts and a small series resistance of 1 ohm (approximately). If the applied voltage is reversed, only a small current of microamperes flows.  What would you use as an equivalent circuit to represent both forward and reverse bias?

Question 2

The active region or the region where a transistor is biased is large and a circuit designer has choices on where to bias a transistor.  If you wanted to obtain a large amplitude output voltage, what place in the active region would be the best choice?

Question 3

Why does it make sense to consider a voltage source or an ideal diode to have zero AC resistance in analyzing an amplifier circuit?

Question 4

Why does a resistor in the emitter part of the circuit result in negative feedback?
